The MWP2024 Social Dinner will take place at Cloister of the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine.

The church was originally built for the Carmelite order in 1325-1328. By 1425, it was decorated with a famed, now dispersed, polyptych by Masaccio. Only one panel of the altarpiece remains in Pisa in the National Museum of San Matteo. The altarpiece for the Chapel of St. Julian is by Masaccio, assisted by Andrea di Giusto, who painted the predella and assisted with the central panel, “Madonna and Child with Angels”. The church underwent many reconstructions across the centuries. Both the church and the adjoining monastery underwent extensive transformations between the second half of the 16th century and 1612, when it was newly consecrated. The present simple façade was designed by Alessandro Gherardesca, in the 1830s. The interior has an organ by Andrea Ravani made in 1613, and altars with painting by Baccio Lomi, Aurelio Lomi, Santi di Tito, Alessandro Allori, Francesco Curradi, and Andrea Boscoli. Since April 2021 the building is closed for an extensive restoration campaign. It is scheduled to reopen in 2022.

Don’t miss the visit to Piazza dei Miracoli tour!

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, or simply the Tower of Pisa, is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of Pisa Cathedral. It is known for its nearly four-degree lean, the result of an unstable foundation. The tower is one of three structures in the Pisa’s Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo), which includes the cathedral and Pisa Baptistry.

The height of the tower is 55.86 metres (183 feet 3 inches) from the ground on the low side and 56.67 m (185 ft 11 in) on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 2.44 m (8 ft 0 in). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes (16,000 short tons). The tower has 296 or 294 steps; the seventh floor has two fewer steps on the north-facing staircase.

The VIRGO laser interferometer is located in the countryside near Pisa, at less than 20km from the Leaning Tower. It is an incredible “instrument” composed of two 3km-long interfering arms for the study of gravitational waves, the existence of which was predicted by Albert Einstein a hundred years ago.
VIRGO contributed to the first detection of gravitational waves on 14 September 2015. That detection deserved the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for the LIGO-VIRGO researchers.
Join us in a guided tour through the technical challenges and scientific successes of this revolutionary observatory on the universe.
